I wrote this song about a dozen years ago, when my wife and I were dating - in that weird in-between time after you’ve fallen in love with someone but before you’ve started spending holidays with them. It was unseasonably warm in Virginia that year, as you’ll hear. This song is about holidays that fail to live up to your expectations, either because the weather isn’t right, or because you’re not with all the people you wish you were with. In a bigger sense, it’s about hope. That’s a word that gets thrown around a lot this time of year, but there’s real hope in knowing that traditions endure beyond individual years, circumstances, and people, and in knowing that love endures beyond everything. I hope you find some comfort in giving this a listen, especially with everything going on in the world right now. Special thanks to C.J. Hartsook for dusting off and sprucing up this recording.

This Christmas Eve it’s like 60 degrees
Who could pick a worse warm weather day
‘Cause this ain’t Miami the last thing I need
Is the heat melting my snowy dreams away
So I flick on the evergreen tree full of lights
That my family picked up just last week
And it strikes me that just ‘cause this winter ain’t white
Doesn’t mean that next year it won’t be
Oh please I need at least a flurry

Next time around will be different
This time next year we’ll be side by side
And we’ll laugh till we cry and we can’t remember why
Or even what last year was like

The first couple glasses of whiskey have passed
And all I can think about is you
‘Cause you’re up where it’s cold with your family I hope
That you see some more snowfall than I do
Holidays just aren’t the same nowadays
That we’re spending them three states apart
But it strikes me that time’s on our side
And there’s always next year and that’s not too far
Yeah there’s always next year and that’s not too far

Who knows what the future holds
But Christmastime will come again
And our love will never end

Merry Christmas dear
Here’s to Christmas
